Can earwax buildup cause hearing loss?

Ear wax is produced by the cells inside the ear canal and is there to protect the ear canal by keeping it clean. A key misconception that many people have is that they need to clean out the ear wax from their ears using a cotton bud, toothpick or their fingers. However, wax is actually self cleaning and trying to clean it yourself can lead to it becoming compacted. This blockage may indeed lead to temporary hearing loss and discomfort and can contribute to ear infections, such as otitis externa.

At Ear Wax Care, we know how upsetting and stressful it can be to experience hearing loss due to impacted wax. If it’s left untreated, in the long term, it might even contribute to social isolation and depression.

So, what can you do about this? If you’re looking to remove ear wax, we’d suggest doing an at home treatment using olive oil. All you have to do is add 2 to 3 drops to your ear, whilst lying on your side. Repeat this 3 to 4 times a day, for 3 to 5 days. Over the course of 2 weeks, you’ll notice that the wax will fall out of your ears.

However, if this doesn’t work, then it’s possible that you need professional treatment from a trained clinician. In this case, we’d strongly suggest that you get in touch with our team here at Ear Wax Care to find out how we can help.
