Can Essential Oils Help with Earwax? (Safety Guide)

Essential oils are often a safe option for earwax removal, however, understanding the different types of oils and how often you should use them can help you make a safe and informed decision.

Here is a mini safety guide to help you:

Safe Essential Oils

  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Mineral Oil

These oils are most commonly used as home remedies to help soften the impacted earwax and help the ears to remove the wax naturally. They can also keep your ears moisturised and are generally safe to use when needed.

Essential Oils with Caution

  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Lavender Oil

The essential oils above are quite strong and can actually irritate the ear canal if used as they are. You should make sure they are diluted to a safe level along with another oil such as olive or coconut oil before you use them. Otherwise, generally speaking, it’s best to just avoid them.

Before using any type of essential pols, you should test this on a part of the skin on your arm or behind your ear to check your sensitivity towards them before putting inside your ears. If after trying safe essential oils your symptoms do not improve, then you should opt to get your ears checked and cleaned by a healthcare professional.

By following the above safety guide, you can ensure your ears are kept healthy and free from blocked earwax. Be sure to ask for professional help if you are ever unsure about what is the safest method for earwax removal.
