Having to live with Eczema comes with its own challenges. Your skin generally requires extra care and attention to help it from becoming too dry and sore. Eczema sometimes can extend to other parts of your skin, including your ears. Your ears can feel dry, itchy and sore if you don’t use the correct cleaning methods.
Here are 3 steps which you can take to help protect your ears:
- Avoid inserting anything into your ears. Using things like cotton buds, hair pins or any other sharp objects inside your ear canal can irritate your skin further and push the earwax deeper into the ear canal causing a blockage. Instead, clean the outer ear only with a soft, damp towel as this will help remove any dry, flaky skin and help with the irritation.
- Moisturise! If your ears feel dry and irritated, you can use a gentle, fragrance free moisturiser to help soothe the skin around your ears. Always make sure this is suitable for sensitive skin types before applying. Skin tends to be dryer after having a shower so make sure you pat your skin dry with a soft towel and follow up with a gentle moisturiser.
- If the skin inside your ears feels itchy due to Eczema, you may be able to use ear drops prescribed by your doctor specifically for people with Eczema. The ear drops can help soothe the dry skin and loosen any built up wax to help it fall out naturally.
Hopefully the above steps can help you maintain your ear health, however, if you do notice your skin is flaring up and you start to experience any soreness and pain, or discharge, ensure you seek medical help from a healthcare professional.
