How Age Affects Earwax Production (Babies vs adults vs Elderly)

When it comes to earwax production, Age plays a huge factor in how much a person can produce. Earwax production can vary hugely vary between Babies, adults, and elderly people. Understanding these the reasons can help you to manage earwax in the best possible way during each stage of life.

Babies

When it comes to Babies, it is normal for them to produce soft, lighter coloured earwax which is produced more frequently. This is because the glands in babies’ ears are very active as their bodies are still developing as a fast pace. Baby ear canals are smaller, which makes the earwax more visible. You may notice that the texture of earwax in babies is sticky, as this traps dust to protects their ear canal and support their overall health. Baby’s ears clean naturally, therefore, you should avoid using cotton buds as this can cause the wax to be pushed in deeper.

Adults

Majority of adults produce a normal amount of earwax, and the colour can vary from light yellow to dark brown if healthy. Other factors such as environment, lifestyle, stress and even hormones can affect the production of earwax. Some adults who have narrow ear canals can also experience excessive earwax because it cannot move out as easily. To ensure your ears are healthy, regularly clean the outer ear as the ear canal clears out naturally.

Elderly

Elderly adults tend to have drier and harder earwax as the skin in the ear canal also becomes thinner, making the wax harder to fall out naturally. Older adults are more likely to have symptoms such as hearing loss, fullness in the ears, and discomfort due to blocked wax in the ear canal.
