Does Earwax Build Up More in One Ear?

Both of your ears produce wax, and strangely enough, one ear may build up more wax than the other. There are several things which can cause one ear to build up more wax than the other.

One of the likely reasons is that some people will often sleep on one side more than the other. If you sleep on the same side every night, there is more pressure on that ear which can affect the way earwax naturally moves out. This can affect the body’s natural cleaning process and cause the wax to build up in the ear you sleep on.

Another likely cause is ear dominance! Yes you read that right! Like you would have a dominant hand, some have a dominant ear. This is usually the ear you use for phone calls or ear buds. Using earbuds or even hearing aids frequently can push wax deeper into your ear canal, causing it to build up on that side.

If you do notice more wax in one ear, it is best to avoid using cotton buds or anything may make the problem worse. Instead, speak to healthcare professional to rule out any health related issues and they can also recommend safe cleaning and maintenance options to remove any earwax buildup.

It is alwas best to understand the reasons as to why earwax builds up more in one ear than the other. As this can help you protect your hearing and keep your ears healthy.
