Earwax and ear sebum serve different purposes; however, they are both natural substances found in and around the ear on different parts of the skin. Understanding the difference can help you better care for your ear health.
Earwax
The medical word for Earwax is Cerumen. This is naturally produced inside the ear canal to protect your ears from dust, debris and bacteria. Earwax also helps the ear canal to stay moisturised and prevents it from becoming dry and irritated. The body naturally removes earwax outward over time which eventually falls out by itself. Earwax can range between different colour and textures depending on your age, health and the environment you live in.
Ear Sebum
Sebum is a natural oil produced by the glands on your skin. When it comes to your ears, these glands are located on the outer part around the ear opening and on the skin of the outer ear. Sebum helps keep your skin soft and moisturised. It is similar to the oil found on your face and sclp. Sebum can case the skin to become greasy around the ear and does not protect the ear canal the way earwax would.
A build up of either substance, earwax or ear sebum, can cause itchiness, irritation, or even a feeling of fullness in the ears. The two mixed together isn’t generally a concern, however, it can lead to blockages in the ear canal. Therefore, it is important to know how to correctly clean your ears to protect your ear health.
