How does diet affect ear wax production?

Our diets play a crucial role in how our bodies function so it is advisable to pay attention to what we put into our bodies if we want to live healthy lives. When it comes to earwax production, diet does not directly affect earwax production for the general public. Earwax is made up of a combination of dead skin cells and secretions of ceruminous glands in the ear canal. The amount and consistency of earwax are usually affected by genetic and environmental factors, and less by diet.

That being said, some research suggests that there are a few aspects of our diets that may affect ear health such as:

Hydration: Hydration is key to the normal functioning of our bodies, including our ears. Dry skin can contribute to earwax consistency becoming thicker, resulting in a higher chance of it becoming impacted. Consuming the recommended amount of water daily can help to keep dehydration at bay. 

Excessive Dairy: It has been anecdotally reported that dairy consumption can sometimes increase earwax production for some people. It is important to note that scientific backing for this claim is limited.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Ensuring you consume enough omega-3 fatty acids generally improves skin health, including the skin inside the ear canal.
