How Often Should Children Get Their Earwax Checked

Earwax is a natural substance produced by your body whether you’re and adult or a child. This helps to protect your ears from dust and bacteria from entering your ear canal. As children’s bodies develop at a faster pace than adults, they don’t usually require their earwax to be checked as ears are self cleaning. However, you can monitor this regularly to help prevent any discomfort or hearing issues. But, how often should you really be checking your child’s ears? Understand this can help to keep their ear health in check.

Children’s ears should really just need to be checked during their routine doctors’ appointments, which is usually on a yearly basis. The healthcare provider will usually take a look inside the child’s ear to check for any blocked wax, redness and signs of infection.

Sometimes children may need more regular earwax check ups especially if they naturally produce more wax or use hearing aids. If your child complains about their ears feeling blocked or if you notice they are struggling to hear you then it’s a good indication to have their ears checked more than once a year.

As a parent you can help keep your child’s ears clean by making sure their outer ear is clean and dry after a bath or swimming. Also, by keeping their earphone or hearing aids clean after each use can help prevent earwax build up. Never insert anything into your child’s ear canal as this can push the wax in deeper and cause complications.
