How to Avoid Earwax Build-Up When Using Headphones

With technology at the forefront of our lives, the use of the devices such as headphones can increase the risk of earwax build up. This is because headphone cover the ears completely which can stop earwax from removing out of the ears naturally. Warm, closed off spaces are a breeding ground for bacteria and can also lead to your body’s natural defence system for producing more earwax.

Here’s a few steps which you can take to keep your ears clean and healthy whilst enjoying great music:

  1. Keep them clean – Regularly wipe the earphone with skin safe antibacterial wipes or a clean cloth to avoid any build up of dirt and bacteria.
  2. There’s always a limit! – Give your ears a regular break from wearing headphones. This can help air to circulate and help your ears to naturally remove earwax from the ear canal. Taking a break can also help any moisture to escape as headphone can trap things like sweat which over time will cause a build up of earwax.
  3. Good Hygiene – Ensure you keep the outer parts of your ears clean by using a soft cloth. Never insert anything into the ear canal as this can push the earwax in further causing a blockage.

Keep them dry – Ensure to pat your ears dry after taking a shower to avoid moisture from building up inside your ears. Trapped water can actually increase your risk of an ear infection. So if you notice any pain or discharge from the ears, make sure to have this checked by a healthcare professional urge
