How to Prepare for an Earwax Removal Appointment

If you have an earwax removal appointment coming up then ensure you are prepared to help make the process smoother and more comfortable for you. Here are some easy-to-follow steps to ensure you get the most out of your upcoming appointment

  • If you have a build-up of earwax then it is a good idea to try and soften the wax before your appointment, as this will make the earwax removal easier and more effective. You can prepare for your appointment at home by using olive oil, or over the counter ear drops a few days before your appointment as this will soften the wax and become easy to remove.
  • Do not insert anything long or sharp into your ears to remove the wax yourself. This will cause the wax to be pushed deeper into the ear canal, making it harder to remove at the appointment.
  • Avoid exposure to water a few days before. Swimming or getting too much water in your ears can make the earwax swell up and make the removal process more complicated. Excessive moisture in the ears puts you more at risk of infections.
  • During the appointment, ensure you tell your healthcare professional of any issues you’ve had with your ears, such as pain, infection, hearing loss etc. Ensure you remain stay calm and still during the procedure to make sure this is quick and smooth.
  • After earwax removal, your ears may become sensitive depending on the method used. Avoid putting anything into your ears after the appointment and make sure you follow the aftercare advice given to you.
