How to Prevent Ear Infections Caused by Earwax Blockage

Ear infections can cause you discomfort and lead to further health issues if not treated. To prevent ear infections, you need to focus on hygiene and know how to look after your ears properly.

By following these simple steps below, you can prevent the risk of ear infections caused by earwax blockages:

  1. Avoid putting anything inside your ears to clean them. Using things like cotton buds can push the wax deeper inside your ears creating a blockage. The impacted earwax can trap bacteria and lead to infections if not cleared.
  2. Using over-the-counter ear drops or olive oil can help soften the built-up earwax and help it fall out of the ears naturally.
  3. Too much exposure to moisture can create a breeding ground for bacteria inside the ears, ultimately leaving you at risk of infection. Be sure to carefully dry your ears with a towel after swimming or showering.
  4. The regular use of headphone, earbuds or hearing aids can push wax deeper into the ear canal and trap bacteria. Try and take breaks from wearing the devices and ensure you keep them clean.
  5. If you notice any discomfort, a feel fullness in your ears or muffled hearing, be sure to seek some help and advice from a doctor immediately. Leaving issues like this untreated can lead to further complications such as infections.
  6. If you frequently have blocked ears or experience and difficulty in hearing, a healthcare professional or audiologist can help safely remove the blocked earwax without risk of any further damage.
