Microsuction vs. Ear Syringing: Which is Safer & More Effective

There are two common methods for earwax removal, Microsuction and Ear syringing. The question is, which one is safer and more effective?

Ear syringing uses water to remove the wax out of the ear. This method consists of using warm water into the ear canal to soften and remove the excess wax. This method is also commonly known as Ear Irrigation. This procedure was commonly used for many years by medical professionals; however, it has come to light that it may not work in all cases and can even cause problems.

Microsuction is a more modern technique which is carried out by using a small suction device to gently remove any excess or impacted earwax. A trained professional will look inside the ear with a microscope or a tiny camera and safely remove the wax without the use of any water.

Which is Safer and more Effective?

Microsuction is considered a safer method than ear syringing as it does not use any water, therefore, there is no risk of infection. The procedure allows you to see inside the ear clearly by protecting the ear from any damage. Microsuction is gentle enough for people who suffer from ear infections or have sensitive ears. Ear syringing can often cause issues such as dizziness, ear infections, or pushing the wax deeper into the ear. It is also not recommended for people with a history of ear problems.

In terms of effectiveness, Microsuction is more of a favourable method as it removes wax safely and carefully without the use of any water. This is also a popular choice as people tend to feel better immediately and have reported better hearing.
