The Connection Between Earwax & Itchy Ears

Earwax is a natural substance produced by your body which traps dust and bacteria from entering your body. Knowing how earwax and itchy ears are connected can help you take better care of your ear health.

Ever had that urge to itch? Earwax and itchy ears can come hand in hand as a lot of people experience both at some point in their lives. Earwax is healthy for your body, however when the amount or texture changes, this can lead to itching and discomfort.

One of the more likely reasons for itchy ears is a buildup of earwax in the ear canal. When your ears produce too much wax, it can collect and become dry and hard. This dryness can cause an itchy feeling in the ear canal. If your ears become blocked with wax, it can lead to itching and discomfort as this irritated the ear canal.

Another reason why some people may have itchy ears is having naturally sensitive skin which can extend into the ear canals. This means that even a healthy amount of earwax can cause itching. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can also affect the ears, making them itchier.

When you’re suddenly met by the urge to itch your ears, try not to relieve this with cotton buds as this can actually make the issue worse. Putting anything into the ear canal can push the wax deeper causing irritation and a risk of them becoming blocked.

The best way to relieve itchy ears caused by earwax, is rinsing your ears with warm water in the shower or using olive oil drops to soften the wax. However, if the itching continues or worsens, be sure to have this checked out by a professional.
