Why Earwax Texture Changes Over Time

Due to several natural factors, earwax texture can change over time. These can include things such as your age, health, hormones and other factors.

A common reason for changes in earwax texture is aging. You may notice that the texture of your earwax can become different as you grow older. As you age, the glands in your ear canal can slow down causing the earwax to become less oily. This tends to lead to dry earwax making it more likely to build up and cause blockages in your ear canal. Babies and children tend to have softer, stickier wax because their glands are more active as their bodies are developing.

Health and lifestyle changes can impact earwax texture. For example, if you have an ear infection, this can make earwax soft or wet. Some medications can also change how much oil your skin produces, which may affect earwax production.

Another thing which can affect the texture of your earwax is Hormones. During hormonal shifts such as puberty and pregnancy can make earwax thicker or stickier. Other factors such as stress may also influence the glands in your ears, leading to texture changes to your earwax.

External factors such as the environment can also influence earwax texture. If you live in a heavy polluted city or a dusty place, this can cause your earwax to become dry and flaky. Using earbuds or headphones often can push wax deeper into the ear, making it more compact.
