Why Your Ear Keeps Crackling (Wax or Eustachian Tube?)

Hearing anything other than day to day sounds in your ears can be worrying, especially if your ears are making a popping or crackling type sound. In most cases there is nothing to be worried about and the symptoms are easily treatable.

There are some common reasons as to why your ears keep crackling. This can sometimes be due to a buildup of earwax or Eustachian tube issues. Knowing the difference between the two can help you understand what is happening.

Earwax Buildup

Earwax is a natural substance produced by your body which helps protect your ears, however, if you have too much earwax then this can cause some issues. When your ears start getting impacted sue to built up wax, it can start to become dry and hard which can sound like crackling inside your ears. This is because your ears are naturally self cleaning and if there is nowhere for the wax to move then you may start noticing some strange sounds. Too much earwax can cause other uncomfortable symptoms such as pressure in your ears, hearing loss, and itching.

Eustachian Tube

The Eustachian tubes connect your ear to the back of your nose which can sometimes explain why your ears may pop if you sneeze when you have a cold or allergies. When the Eustachian tubes become blocked, you may notice cracking or popping sounds especially whenever you move your jaw to yawn or swallow. You may also experience other symptoms such as fullness in the ear, dizziness, or even muffled hearing
